THE SECOND ERICH BERGEL INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION
Tîrgu Mureș State Philharmonic Orchestra in cooperation with Associazione Artes and the Association Kult Mind in partnership with the Council of TG Mures, announces the Second edition of “Erich Bergel international Conducting Competition”
The competition will be held in Târgu Mureș from the 8th until 12th April 2024 and it is dedicated to the memory of famous conductor Erich Bergel, who was born in Romania and whose career spread worldwide, both as a conductor and as a teacher.
RULES
ROUNDS OF THE COMPETITION
1.1 The competition is structured in two main phases, ELIMINATORY and FINAL;
1.2 Eliminatory phase: from October the 15th 2023 until March the 1st 2024;
1.3 Final phase: from 8th until 12th April 2024;
ELIGIBILITY
2.1 Conductors born after October the 15th 1974 can take part to the competition;
2.2 Former students of one or more members of the jury, as well as musicians that have kinship or professional relationships with one or more members of the jury, will have to declare their current situation at the time of application;
COMPETITION’S STRUCTURE
Eliminatory phase
3.1 this phase consists in the examination of videos; the candidates are required to send one (1) video that should show the candidate’s skills to the members of the jury;
3.2 pieces from any historical period are accepted;
3.3 original scores or adaptations are accepted;
3.4 any kind of ensemble is accepted;
3.5 videos of a performance or a rehearsal are accepted;
3.6 the videos must be played in streaming mode without any restriction (videos which have to be downloaded will not be accepted);
3.7 the videos can be private or public as long as they can be seen by the entire jury without any restrictions (no need for the jury to register, no advertising before the video starts);
Final phase
4.1 the Final phase will take place in the Palace of Culture, Piata Victoriei nr. 1, Târgu Mureș, Romania;
4.2 the Final phase consists of a First round, a Second round, a Semifinal and a Final;
4.3 the repertoire for each phase is written in Appendix A, at the bottom of this page;

5.1 the candidates admitted will be informed by email before March the 10th 2024 and their names will be published on the website and on the social media of the competition;

APPLICATION
8.1 in order to register, the competitors have to send their application exclusively through the application page of this website;
8.2 application forms and documentation for the eliminatory round have to be sent by 24:00 UTC (Midnight) March 1st 2024;
8.3 the application fee for the eliminatory round is €90,00;
8.4 the application fee is non-refundable, except in case of cancellation of the competition;
8.5 the candidates admitted to the Final phase will be required to pay the participation fee of €400,00 by March the 14th 2024;
8.6 the participation fee is non-refundable, except in case of cancellation of the competition;
FINAL NOTICE
9.1 by submitting their application, the competitors assent to the use of their image either through photographs and audio / video that can be broadcast via radio, television and other media (internet, etc.);
9.2 by submitting their application, the competitors assent to the use of their name and image in printed publications related to the competition; the organizers expect candidates to be available for interviews, photo shoots, and any other activities designed to make the competition attractive for the media;
9.3 the application and participation fee will not be refunded for any reason, except for the cancellation of the competition; any legal disputes will be solved according to Romanian legislation at the Târgu Mureș Court of Appeal.

– F. Schubert: Symphony n° 5 in B flat major
The competitors admitted to the Semifinal will know which movement of the symphony they will have to conduct at the moment they step on the podium;
FINAL
Friday April 12th
The competitors will have to choose 2 symphonies from the following list
– F. Mendelssohn: Symphony n° 4 in A major “Italian”
– C. Frank: Symphony in D minor
– J. Brahms: Symhpony n° 1 in C minor op 68
– J. Brahms: Symphony n° 2 in D major op. 73
– A. Dvorak: Symphony n° 7 in D major op. 70
– F. Schubert: Symphony n° 5 in B flat major
The Final consists in a dress rehearsal and a final concert, the final concert is part of the competition; candidates will be judged according to their work both during the rehearsal and the concert; the winner will be announced after the concert in front of the audience;
The candidates admitted to the Final will know the Symphony they will have to conduct at the end of the Semifinal;
